Dublin in-laws charged with murder in shooting of son-in-law
In-laws Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, face murder charges following the fatal shooting of their son-in-law, Jonathan McKinsey, in a Dublin, California, parking lot on September 26. McKinsey, a former engineering lead for The New York Times games department, was shot and killed at the Dublin Sports Grounds.
The case has revealed a deeply contentious history between McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang. Court documents and reports indicate a long-standing cycle of mutual allegations involving domestic violence, child abuse, and threats. McKinsey had previously faced allegations of child abuse, which he denied, while his defense team has suggested he was a victim of violence and isolation by his wife and in-laws during his gender transition.
Additional details surfaced regarding the couple's history, including claims of control and psychological distress. McKinsey had reportedly alleged that his wife controlled his social interactions and even claimed a traumatic incident involving a lost pregnancy. Conversely, Jang has alleged that McKinsey made death threats against her and her parents.
Police recovered two firearms from the scene, one held by Chen and another used by Zhang. The defense for Chen is currently seeking her release, describing her as a “loving, responsible grandmother” who may struggle in high-security custody. The investigation into the exact motive for the shooting remains ongoing.
