Dublin memorial honors seven Inchicore men who fought in Spanish Civil War
A new memorial has been unveiled at Richmond Barracks in Inchicore, Dublin, to honor seven local men who fought against fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War. The sculpture was officially unveiled by Dublin Lord Mayor Daryl Barron.
The seven men—Tony Fox, Joe Haines, Mick May, Paddy McElroy, Liam McGregor, Joe Monks, and Bill Scott—joined the 15th International Brigade to support the Spanish Republic and oppose General Francisco Franco’s forces. The ceremony brought together families, historians, and members of the Friends of the International Brigades in Ireland (FIBI) to reflect on the volunteers' courage and political convictions.
The memorial highlights the connection between the Inchicore community, which was historically shaped by the railway and trade unionism, and the values of solidarity the men carried to the battlefields of Spain.
