Dublin murder trial of Derek Boyd for killing Mark Carroll

Derek Boyd is on trial at Dublin’s Central Criminal Court for the murder of Mark Carroll, a man who entered his north Dublin home after an argument. Boyd’s defence argues he acted instinctively when he stabbed Carroll, claiming self‑defence, while the prosecution says Boyd deliberately chose a knife and that Carroll’s return was “entirely reasonable”.

The jury heard that Boyd was serving a suspended sentence for the manslaughter of his sister at the time of the killing. Boyd’s partner, Chantelle Harcourt, is also charged with impeding the prosecution. Prosecutor Sean Guerin described the incident as a “horrible, pointless and meaningless” killing, noting that the two men had been on friendly terms earlier that day. The case revolves around whether Boyd’s actions were a pre‑meditated attack or a reflexive response to a perceived threat.
