Dublin nightlife advisor calls for urgent licensing reform

Dublin’s Night-Time Economy Advisor, Ray O’Donoghue, has called for urgent reform and investment to modernize the capital’s nightlife strategy. Speaking at the first conference dedicated to the night-time economy, O’Donoghue noted that Ireland is currently lagging behind other European cities that have spent decades developing comprehensive strategies for life after dark.

A primary focus of the proposed reforms is the modernization of outdated licensing laws, some of which date back to the 1800s and 1930s. O’Donoghue emphasized that reform is not merely about extending operating hours, but about establishing a regulatory framework suitable for a modern European capital. There were also suggestions to transfer responsibility for licensing laws from the Department of Justice to the Department of Culture.

O’Donoghue highlighted the critical importance of grassroots venues in nurturing Irish musical talent, noting that successful artists rely on these smaller spaces to develop before reaching major stages. He argued that a holistic approach to the night-time economy must encompass more than just pubs and clubs, including transport, safety, live music, and public spaces.
