Dublin officials call for rickshaw ban after fatal accident
Dublin City Council is facing calls for urgent action to regulate or ban rickshaws following the death of Danielle O’Keane. Ms. O’Keane, a mother of two, died in a hospital after being struck by a car following a rickshaw accident on North Wall Quay in Dublin City Centre.
The incident occurred while Ms. O’Keane and friends were traveling back from a Westlife concert. The rickshaw reportedly hit a curb, causing passengers to fall out, at which point Ms. O’Keane was hit by a vehicle.
Fine Gael Councillor Danny Byrne has called on the government to immediately commence legislation intended to regulate rickshaws that has been inactive for nearly a decade. He argued that motorized rickshaws should be subject to the same licensing and insurance requirements as cars and motorcycles, stating that passenger safety must take priority over the operational costs of operators.
