Dublin tech workers hold counter-summit over AI job concerns

Tech workers in Dublin, Ireland, organized a counter-event titled the ‘AI Workers Summit’ ahead of an international artificial intelligence summit hosted in the city. The demonstration, organized by a labor union, aimed to highlight concerns regarding frequent layoffs, the rapid expansion of data centers, and the growing impact of artificial intelligence on job security and livelihoods.

Participants expressed frustration over the shift from human-led roles to machine-assisted tasks, such as translation work being replaced by AI. Union organizer Arcadia Jacob noted that workers have faced significant pressure from continuous waves of layoffs, including nearly one thousand cases in a single year.

Academic expert Patrick Precihan highlighted the environmental and infrastructure impact of data centers in Ireland, noting they currently consume 23 percent of the national electricity grid. Precihan called for a temporary halt to data center development to allow policymakers to create a more sustainable green industrial strategy.
