Dubrovnik recognized internationally for sustainable tourism management

Dubrovnik is gaining international recognition for its strategic approach to managing overtourism and preserving its historical heritage. Major media outlets, including the BBC World Service and the Daily Express, have highlighted the city as a model for sustainable destination management.

Key initiatives cited include the ‘Respect the City’ project, real-time data usage, and cruise ship management to mitigate tourist pressure. Beyond visitor control, the city is implementing policies to maintain its local population, such as the Dubrovnik housing program. This program utilizes the city's right of first refusal to renovate properties and provide affordable housing for young families within the historic core.

Mayor Mato Franković and cultural advisor Jelka Tepšić have emphasized that the city's goal is to balance tourism development with the quality of life for its residents, moving away from measuring success solely through arrival numbers.
