Duchess of Edinburgh visits Cumbria to support rural communities

The Duchess of Edinburgh conducted a two-day visit to Cumbria and Northumberland on September 8-9, 2026, to support rural community development and agricultural initiatives.

At the Rheged Centre in Penrith, the Duchess met with members of 16 rural community organizations as part of an event hosted by The Royal Countryside Fund. This gathering marked the conclusion of a multi-year investment program launched in 2024 in partnership with The National Lottery Community Fund. The program provided £387,000 in funding to support diverse projects, including community transport, food security, youth leadership, environmental training, and local enterprise development.

According to program data, 93% of participating groups reported increased viability and sustainability, while 63% established new income streams. During her visit, the Duchess also visited Whins Farm in her capacity as patron of the Addington Fund, an organization that assists farming families with affordable housing and helps first-generation farmers secure leases.
