DuckDB releases 2.0.0 LTS major update
The DuckDB Foundation has officially released DuckDB 2.0.0 LTS, codenamed ‘Cinnamon Teal’. This represents the largest feature release for the OLAP database to date, introducing several significant architectural improvements.
Key updates include the Quack protocol, which enables client-server functionality by allowing users to connect to DuckDB instances on remote machines. The release also features asynchronous I/O for improved performance, a first-class VARIANT type for schema-less data handling, and a dedicated ‘agent mode’.
Additionally, the update includes a completely revamped SQL parser, which empowers extension developers to add new statements and keywords more easily. For Python users, the release introduces a new appender to allow for more efficient row insertion. As a Long Term Support (LTS) release, DuckDB 2.0.0 is scheduled to receive support through at least October 2027.
