DUI penalties handed out in Caribbean Netherlands and Belgium

In the Caribbean Netherlands, police reported a series of alcohol‑related traffic offences between 19 June and 22 June 2026. Four drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, receiving short‑term driving bans ranging from one to four hours and having their licences confiscated. Additional traffic checks resulted in a range of fines for offences such as driving without a licence, insurance or proper vehicle markings.

In Belgium, a 42‑year‑old man from Kortrijk was convicted after a police breath test showed a blood‑alcohol level of 1.8 ‰. The court imposed a 40‑day driving ban (to be served over consecutive weekends) and a €1,000 fine. The conviction was his first alcohol‑related traffic offence, and he expressed remorse, citing the need for his licence for work.
