Duisburg police investigate theft of elderly woman's necklace

An 87-year-old woman was robbed of a sentimental gold necklace in Duisburg, Germany, on September 18, 2026. The incident occurred around 11:25 a.m. at Kometenplatz in the Walsum district.

According to police reports, a young girl, estimated to be four or five years old, approached the senior citizen, who was using a walker, and unexpectedly hugged and kissed her. Following the interaction, the child returned to two adult women. The victim only realized her necklace—a gift from her late husband from 30 years ago—was missing once she reached her destination.

Investigators are searching for the child and the two adult companions, described as women between the ages of 20 and 40 wearing dark clothing. While the investigation is ongoing, German law dictates that criminal liability begins at age 14, meaning the child would not face legal consequences even if identified.
