Duke football defeats Virginia 19-16 with trick-play touchdown

Duke University secured a 19-16 victory over Virginia in an ACC matchup at Scott Stadium. The Blue Devils broke a two-game losing streak with the win, improving their record to 5-2.

Sophomore running back Nate Sheppard provided the decisive play, throwing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Brody Keefe with 1:14 remaining in the game. Earlier, Sheppard had scored on a 32-yard touchdown run during Duke's opening possession. While Sheppard was held to 55 rushing yards on 15 carries, the Blue Devils' defense played a critical role, recording four sacks in the second half and holding Virginia to just three points after halftime.

Virginia had taken a 16-13 lead following a 30-yard field goal by Will Bettridge with three minutes left. However, Duke safety Patrick Smith-Young sealed the victory by intercepting a pass from Virginia quarterback Beau Pribula with 36 seconds remaining.
