Duke of Braganza to support Vila Viçosa library project

The Duke of Braganza, Duarte Pio, has expressed his intention to support the creation of the future Municipal Library of Vila Viçosa. During a visit to the municipal offices alongside his wife, Isabel de Herédia, the Duke indicated his willingness to contribute to the project by collecting books, including works from his personal collection.

Mayor Inácio Esperança noted that the Duke’s connections with European royal families could facilitate the acquisition of an international collection featuring books in various languages and from different countries. This diversity is expected to enrich the cultural offering of the new facility, which is planned for the historic former Jesuit College building.

The Duke emphasized the importance of a diverse collection to attract various audiences, particularly younger readers. He mentioned his previous experience in similar endeavors, such as the establishment of a library in Timor last year.
