Romanian sports mourn deaths of Dumitru Marcu and Mircea Abraham

Romanian sports are in mourning following the deaths of two prominent athletes.

Footballer Dumitru ‘Mitică’ Marcu has passed away at the age of 76. A former winger for Universitatea Craiova and Steaua București, Marcu was a key figure in the 1970s, winning two Romanian league titles and two Romanian Cups with Universitatea Craiova. He also represented the Romanian national team 16 times, notably scoring during the 9-0 victory against Finland in the 1974 World Cup qualifiers. In honor of his legacy, the Professional Football League (LPF) has announced a moment of silence before all matches in the 5th round of the Superliga.

In volleyball, former national team captain Mircea Abraham has died at the age of 53. Abraham had a distinguished career as both a player and a coach, playing for clubs such as Elcond Zalău, Deltacons Tulcea, and Dinamo București. He served as the captain of the Romanian national team for nine years and was later honored as an ‘Emeritus Master of Sport’. Abraham had been living in Ireland in recent years.
