Dumitru Prunariu honored with Theodore von Karman Award

Dumitru Prunariu, the first and only Romanian to travel into space, has been honored with the Theodore von Karman Award, the highest distinction from the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA). The award was presented in Antalya, Turkey, recognizing his lifelong contributions to astronautics, planetary defense, and his leadership within the Romanian Space Agency and the United Nations.

In a separate event at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iași, Romania, Prunariu and Canadian astronaut Julie Payette held a conference to mark the 45th anniversary of Romania’s first space flight in 1981. During the session, Payette shared insights from her 2009 space mission, discussing the technical challenges of spaceflight, such as using robotic arms and performing extravehicular activities to connect electrical wiring.
