Duna Menti Múzeum hosts Carpathian Basin dowry chest exhibition

The Duna Menti Múzeum has opened a new exhibition titled ‘The Hungarian Dowry – Secrets of the Dowry Chests in the Carpathian Basin’. The display features 64 dowry chests created by 52 different artists.

These decorated chests originate from various regions within the Carpathian Basin, including Transylvania, Southern Hungary, Upper Hungary, and Hungary. The exhibition aims to provide a comprehensive view of the painted furniture culture of the region through the eyes of contemporary creators.

Historically, the dowry chest served as an iconic symbol of marriage. From the Middle Ages through the 19th century, it was customary for women to receive these chests as part of their dowry, which remained their personal property throughout their lives. The exhibition, curated by Csilla Székely, highlights how regional styles, such as those from the furniture-painting center of Komárom, influenced the diverse motifs found across the Danube region.
