Duncan Amoah demands accountability on illegal mining and ex‑finance minister in Ghana

Ghana’s Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) Executive Secretary Duncan Amoah urged political leaders to cease protecting individuals involved in illegal mining, citing the recent conviction of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, who received a 20‑year sentence for illegal mining linked to Akonta Mining Company. Amoah warned that polluted rivers affect all Ghanaians and called for impartial law enforcement to safeguard public health.

Amoah also called for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori‑Atta to answer for decisions made during his tenure. He noted Ofori‑Atta’s ongoing corruption charges in Ghana and a recent U.S. immigration court ruling granting him permanent residency, while the Office of the Special Prosecutor continues to seek his extradition over alleged misconduct involving the Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited contracts and the National Cathedral project. Amoah emphasised that accountability should transcend party lines and be central to Ghana’s democratic governance.
