Duncan fire destroys buildings and classic car
A July 22 fire on Festubert Street in Duncan, British Columbia, destroyed several buildings and multiple vehicles. Among the losses was a 1972 Pontiac Luxury Lemans owned by longtime resident Joe Sawchuk, who had owned the copper-colored classic since purchasing it new at age 21.
In addition to the Pontiac, other tenants lost a Cadillac, a Nissan sedan, a Mercedes Benz, and a motorbike. The blaze required 35 firefighters to extinguish and caused heavy damage to three buildings, including four units at 320 Coronation Avenue.
The fire left 16 people displaced. Cowichan Emergency Services provided temporary accommodation at the Best Western in North Cowichan for those affected.
