Duncan Jones premieres animated film Rogue Trooper at TIFF

Director Duncan Jones has returned to theatrical filmmaking with ‘Rogue Trooper’, an R-rated animated science fiction film based on the British 2000 AD comic strip. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Set on the chemically poisoned planet Nu-Earth, the story follows a genetically engineered super soldier known as a ‘Genetic Infantryman’. The protagonist, G.I. 19, carries the consciousness of his fallen comrades, which are embedded into his equipment, including his gun, helmet, and knapsack. The film features a British voice cast including Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell, and Sean Bean.

Produced using a combination of motion-capture and Unreal Engine 5, the film has been noted for its video game-like aesthetic. Jones expressed satisfaction that the original creators of the comic, Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons, approved of the adaptation.
