Duncan Jones' Rogue Trooper premieres at TIFF 2026
Director Duncan Jones has returned to the spotlight with the North American premiere of ‘Rogue Trooper’ at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film is an animated sci-fi war movie based on the cult classic British comic strip from 2000 AD, originally created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons.
Produced as an independent feature, the film utilizes Unreal Engine graphics software to achieve a large-scale spectacle on an indie budget. The story follows 19, a genetically engineered infantryman, as he navigates a poisonous planet and a war between the Southers and the Norts. The character carries the memory chips of fallen comrades, which allow them to communicate with him during combat.
The production marks a long-term project for Jones, who first met with Rebellion Developments—the owners of 2000 AD—over two decades ago. The film features a voice cast including Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell, Matt Berry, and Jemaine Clement.
