Duncan Livingstone Kimathi sentenced to death for 2012 murder
A Nairobi court has sentenced 37-year-old Duncan Livingstone Kimathi to death for the 2012 murder of Sarah Akello Aruwa, a final-year International Relations student at the United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa).
Justice Kanyi Kimondo delivered the sentence after finding Kimathi guilty of murder with malice aforethought. The incident occurred between June 30 and July 1, 2012, in the Kiamako area of Githunguri, Kiambu County. The court heard that Kimathi and his accomplices lured Akello into a trap using a fabricated identity, Daniel Muriithi, to meet her.
Following the abduction, the captors used Akello’s mobile phone to contact her family and demand a ransom of Ksh 100,000. Akello’s mother, Hellen Atieno Aruwa, testified to negotiating the amount down to Ksh 70,000 before reporting the matter to the police. The prosecution presented 17 witnesses to establish the circumstances of the abduction, the ransom demands, and the subsequent killing.
