Dunedin Hospital outpatient building officially opens

The new Dunedin Hospital outpatient building has officially opened, marking the first completed stage of the Dunedin Hospital rebuild project. The $440 million, five-storey, 15,000sq m facility was constructed by Southbase on behalf of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora.

Designed to serve approximately 352,000 people across the Otago and Southland regions, the building will provide a wide range of ambulatory care services. These include day surgery, outpatient clinics, and diagnostic radiology services such as MRI, CT, X-ray, and ultrasound. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to support an additional 1,700 day surgeries, 13,300 medical imaging appointments, and 2,700 medical day stay appointments annually.

The building features significant digital infrastructure, including over 150 kilometres of cabling and a regional clinical portal for sharing patient records. While the outpatient building is now complete, the inpatient building on the former Cadbury site is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2031.
