Dungeons & Dragons directors cite poor timing for film flop

Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have attributed the box office failure of ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ to a ‘perfect storm’ of poor timing.

Daley noted that the film’s March 2023 release coincided with the record-breaking launch of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ just four days later. Additionally, the film was released during a period of significant backlash against Wizards of the Coast regarding proposed changes to its Open-Gaming License. Although the company eventually reversed those licensing decisions, the resulting player boycotts negatively impacted the film’s reception.

While Paramount has declined to produce a sequel due to financial reasons, the directors expressed hope that another studio might eventually continue the franchise.
