Paramount's Dungeons & Dragons sequel script completed but faces financial hurdles

Co‑director Jonathan Goldstein confirmed at San Diego Comic‑Con 2026 that a sequel script for the 2023 film *Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves* has been finished. He said the team was hired to write it and that they "love the cast" and think fans would enjoy the story. However, Goldstein warned that "financial reasons" – the high production cost of the first film versus its box‑office return – may prevent the sequel from ever being made.

The original movie earned about $205 million worldwide against an estimated $150 million production budget (not including marketing), a figure that fell short of the roughly $375 million needed to break even. Paramount Pictures, the film’s distributor, has undergone ownership changes (acquired by Skydance Media in 2025) and its co‑producer eOne was sold to Lionsgate, adding further uncertainty to the project's future. Despite strong critical reception (91% Rotten Tomatoes score) and a devoted fan base, the financial risk appears to outweigh the potential reward, leaving the sequel’s fate unresolved.
