Dungeons & Dragons sequel script completed but faces financial hurdles

Co‑directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have finished a screenplay for a follow‑up to the 2023 fantasy film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, but they say the project is unlikely to move forward because of the high cost of producing large‑scale fantasy movies. Goldstein confirmed the completed script at San Diego Comic‑Con, noting that no production green light has been granted.

The original film earned strong critical scores and grossed about $205 million worldwide against a $150 million production budget, but marketing expenses reduced its profitability. Since the film’s release, Paramount Pictures – the original co‑producer and distributor – was acquired by Skydance Media, and Hasbro‑linked eOne was sold to Lionsgate, adding further uncertainty. Meanwhile, Netflix is developing a new Dungeons & Dragons series, underscoring the franchise’s continued interest despite the sequel’s stalled status.
