Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft expansion set for November release

Wizards of the Coast principal game designer James Wyatt has shared details regarding the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft expansion, scheduled for release on November 17th. Developed in collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment, this project marks the first release under the D&D Universes Beyond banner.

Wyatt described the expansion as a “great big toolbox” designed to provide character options, monsters, and dungeons for players to use in a sandbox style. Rather than a direct mechanical translation of the video game, the design team focused on paraphrasing the essence of Azeroth’s classes, factions, and lore into the D&D fifth edition ruleset. This approach allows for more flexibility in gameplay, such as priests wearing armor or paladins serving different roles, prioritizing the “flavor” of the characters over strict MMO mechanics.

The expansion is intended to serve as an entry point for World of Warcraft players to explore tabletop role-playing games by utilizing their existing knowledge of species and classes.
