Dunoon murder investigation launched after four bodies found burned

Police in the Western Cape have launched a murder investigation after the burnt remains of four unidentified individuals were discovered in an open field near the N7 off-ramp on Malibongwe Drive in Dunoon on Sunday, 23 August. Investigators noted that the bodies were found metres apart and suggest that tyres may have been used to set the victims alight.

Local ward councillor Bulelwa Mayende stated that residents believe the killings may be linked to a string of alleged gang rapes that have occurred in the community since mid-June. While Mayende noted that residents may have taken matters into their own hands, she emphasized that no official link to the alleged crimes has been confirmed by law enforcement.

The incident has also drawn scrutiny toward the 10111 emergency call system. Ian Cameron, chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, reported that a witness who provided GPS coordinates during the attack allegedly had the call terminated by an operator after requesting the operator's details. Disciplinary action is reportedly underway following a review of the call handling.
