Suffolk wildfire near Sizewell nuclear plant prompts major incident FAST-MOVING

A wind‑driven wildfire ignited at Dunwich Heath on the Suffolk coast on 30 July 2026 at about 5:30 pm. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident because of the blaze’s size and complexity. Approximately 90 firefighters and 14 fire engines, supported by specialist equipment such as drones, 4×4 quad‑bikes and Unimogs, were deployed to fight the roughly 100‑hectare fire, which spread over an area equivalent to about 140 football pitches.

Around 200 caravans at the Cliff House Holiday Park were evacuated and residents were urged to avoid the area, keep roads clear and keep windows shut. No injuries or fatalities were reported. Authorities confirmed the fire posed no immediate threat to the nearby Sizewell B nuclear power station or the under‑construction Sizewell C site; both operators are monitoring the situation. A UK Health Security Agency amber heat‑health alert was also in force as prolonged drought and heatwave conditions have heightened fire risk.
