Duo Packaging develops graphene-enhanced sustainable film
Manchester-based manufacturer Duo Packaging, in partnership with the University of Manchester’s Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC), has developed a graphene-enhanced flexible packaging film known as 2DPE. The new material is designed to increase the use of recycled content in packaging while maintaining tensile strength and tear resistance.
Industrial trials conducted with the retailer QVC demonstrated that the film increased material strength by up to 35% and allowed recycled content to rise from 45% to 60%. QVC has implemented the film at its Liverpool fulfilment centre, a move expected to save approximately 50 tonnes of virgin plastic and 148,000 tonnes of carbon annually.
Operational benefits noted during trials include a 15-degree reduction in required heat-sealing temperatures and a 5% reduction in film weight. These efficiencies are expected to lower energy consumption and reduce Extended Producer Responsibility fees for retailers.
