Duolingo survey highlights shifts in summer learning trends

A survey conducted by Duolingo, Inc. among 825 parents of elementary and junior high school students reveals shifting trends in summer vacation learning. While traditional activities like independent research projects and book reports have declined by over 20 percentage points compared to previous generations, the use of digital learning apps and tablet-based materials has risen, with 23.4% of children currently utilizing them.

Approximately 83.2% of parents consider autonomous learning outside of school homework to be important. However, maintaining consistency remains a challenge; the primary obstacles cited are a lack of child concentration or motivation (32.5%) and the difficulty of establishing consistent study habits (28.6%).

The data suggests a strong correlation between family involvement and successful learning. In households where children met or exceeded learning expectations, 88.9% reported studying with family at least once a week. These parents often engage in active support, such as setting goals or selecting educational materials together, rather than simply prompting the child to study.

Regarding emerging technology, 47.1% of children use generative AI for their studies. While this provides new options, parents expressed concerns regarding over-reliance on AI and the potential reduction in critical thinking opportunities.
