Durango approves new sustainable building ordinance
The Durango City Council has granted initial approval for a new sustainable building ordinance. This modification to the Environmental Improvement Ordinance aims to update local regulations from 2007 to align with the Basque Government’s Decree 80/2022.
The new rules introduce updated environmental and social criteria for future residential and office developments. Key measures include reinforced energy efficiency, improved thermal and acoustic comfort, and the creation of community spaces such as bicycle rooms. Additionally, the ordinance addresses gender perspective by requiring the elimination of dark spots in entrances and hallways.
Due to rising summer temperatures, the regulation also mandates the planning of efficient future cooling systems. Mayor Mireia Elkoroiribe stated the measure is a step toward creating more sustainable and secure homes. During the debate, several amendments were accepted from opposition groups EH Bildu and Herriaren Eskubidea, though the latter criticized the government for rejecting certain key allegations.
