Durango reports first human case of screw-worm myiasis

The Durango State Health Secretariat has confirmed the first human case of screw-worm myiasis (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in the state. The patient, a man from the Los Guayabos community in the Pueblo Nuevo municipality, is recovering favorably after receiving treatment.

Health officials noted that the patient’s condition, which includes a varicose ulcer on a lower limb and recurring seizures, contributed to the infection. The use of anticonvulsant medications reduced his skin sensitivity, preventing him from noticing the fly landing on the lesion. Authorities warned that individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes or untreated ulcers, particularly elderly people living alone, may be at higher risk.

This human case occurs amid a broader outbreak affecting livestock. In Sonora, SENASICA has reported numerous cases across several municipalities, including Álamos and Huatabampo. Nationally, there are approximately 1,880 active cases of the parasite in animals, raising concerns regarding sanitary control and livestock exports.
