Durazno mayor Algorta and Argentine producers push new rural road financing plans

Durazno mayor Felipe Algorta announced a proposal to create logistic corridors with asphalted trunk routes that would divert heavy traffic onto national highways, relieving the wear on rural roads. He suggested that those who generate the most impact on the roads, such as large feedlots and agricultural operations, should contribute to their maintenance, backing a plan promoted by the President of the Council of Mayors, Carlos Enciso.

In Argentina’s Buenos Aires province, the Sociedad Rural de Nueve de Julio presented a draft ordinance to establish a Rural Road Commission. The commission would be composed of agricultural producers, the local Chamber of Commerce and municipal officials, and would manage the district’s road and water‑infrastructure works using the majority of the local road tax and provincial funds. Its president, Hugo Enriquez, said the proposal stems from five months of study of similar initiatives in other districts.

Both initiatives aim to secure dedicated funding and professional management for rural road networks in their respective regions.
