KwaMakhutha mass shooting kills at least 11 people in South Africa
At least 11 people, including a pregnant woman, were killed during a mass shooting at a house party in the KwaMakhutha township, south of Durban, South Africa. The attack occurred on the night of Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
According to KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli and the South African Police Service, three armed assailants stormed the residence where approximately 14 people were gathered. Reports indicate the attackers may have forced the victims into a single room before opening fire. In addition to the fatalities, three people were wounded. One victim died at the scene, while others were transported to hospitals, with one additional death reported following medical treatment.
Police have launched a 72-hour tracking operation to apprehend the suspects. While a specific motive has not been confirmed, authorities stated that a feud between rival criminal groups cannot be ruled out. Preliminary investigations suggest that some of the victims were already known to police Crime Intelligence in connection with alleged illegal activities.
Witnesses reported that the assailants also set fire to a vehicle belonging to one of the victims before fleeing. This incident occurs amid high rates of violent crime in South Africa, where the government has previously deployed military support to assist police in high-crime areas.
