Durek Verrett explains use of ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ for Norwegian royals

Durek Verrett has addressed the use of the terms ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ when referring to his parents-in-law, King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway. In recent social media videos on TikTok, Verrett has been heard using these affectionate nicknames for the royal couple.

Verrett explained to Dagbladet that this practice is rooted in African tradition, where a partner’s parents are embraced as one’s own mother and father upon joining the family. He stated that using these terms is a sign of ‘love, closeness, and respect’ and noted that it has always been the natural way they interact.

Verrett and Princess Märtha Louise married in August 2024 in Geiranger. The couple is also set to appear in a new television series titled ‘Alternative Norge’, which explores supernatural and spiritual topics.
