Durga Puja traditions face shifts in West Bengal
The traditional community-led organization of Durga Puja in West Bengal is facing significant shifts. Historically, neighborhood celebrations relied on collective resident efforts for tasks such as collecting subscriptions, decorating pandals, and preparing food. However, changing demographics—including younger residents moving away for work and increased professional commitments—have led to a decline in local volunteerism.
As a result, many celebrations are increasingly managed by professional artists, event management companies, and corporate sponsors. This shift has raised questions regarding the preservation of community character and the level of resident involvement. The changing landscape follows a recent tragedy at the Chorbagan pandal, where a stampede resulted in 19 deaths and 25 injuries, highlighting the critical importance of organizational safety and accessibility.
In response to the festivities, media outlets like TV9 Bangla are launching specialized programming to capture the festival's breadth. These programs include coverage of local customs, the Bengali diaspora, and various community competitions, aiming to document the diverse cultural expressions of the holiday across Kolkata and the wider West Bengal districts.
