Durganagar villagers build own road after 35 years of neglect

Residents of Durganagar village, located in the Cherapaudhi Gram Panchayat near Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, have begun constructing their own road after waiting approximately 35 to 40 years for government intervention. The community, consisting of about 1,200 people, is working to transform a 2-kilometer stretch of muddy, unpaved path into a usable route using manual tools like shovels and baskets.

The initiative follows decades of neglect experienced by families displaced by the Bargi Dam. The lack of infrastructure recently led to a medical emergency where a pregnant woman was forced to give birth in the mud along the path because ambulances and vehicles could not navigate the terrain.

In response to the systemic failure to provide basic amenities, over 100 villagers, including men, women, and children, are participating in daily labor to build the road. Local residents have expressed a loss of faith in government assurances and have threatened to withhold votes in upcoming elections.
