Durham County Council faces £83m deficit and service cuts

Durham County Council has launched a public consultation to address a projected £83.662 million budget deficit over the next four years. The financial pressure is driven by rising costs for statutory services, including adult and children’s social care, home-to-school transport, energy, and waste management, alongside central government funding gaps.

To balance the budget, the council is considering council tax increases, efficiency improvements through its ‘Changing Together’ programme, and various savings proposals. Potential cuts and changes include reductions in grass cutting and road gritting, library budget slashes, increased fees for parking and weddings, and job cuts in several departments, with some services potentially being replaced by AI.

The Reform UK administration, led by Councillor Andrew Husband and including Darren Grimes, faces these challenges amid internal political instability. The council has been advised that a council tax increase of at least 5 per cent may be necessary to avoid effective bankruptcy.
