Durham Police Deputy Chief Chris Kirkpatrick retires after misconduct investigation

Deputy Chief Chris Kirkpatrick of the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has retired following a misconduct finding by the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA). The LECA investigation concluded that Kirkpatrick’s actions violated the Community Safety and Policing Act after he used a racially inappropriate term during a meeting of the Afro‑Caribbean Canadian Internal Support Network.

The civilian Durham Police Services Board reviewed the LECA report and agreed to end Kirkpatrick’s employment relationship with the service. The board reiterated its commitment to an inclusive workplace and maintaining public trust in policing. In June, DRPS announced it is hiring two new deputy chiefs to fill the vacancy.
