Durham Police seek suspect after Tesla strikes two officers
Durham Regional Police are searching for a 23-year-old Ajax man after two officers were struck by a Tesla SUV in Oshawa. The incident occurred around 1:05 a.m. on September 22.
The confrontation began when officers attempted to stop an Acura sedan traveling at high speeds without lights on Simcoe Street North. The driver fled, but was later located hiding in a backyard and taken into custody. A search of the Acura revealed drugs and a replica firearm. The suspect was reportedly under conditions prohibiting him from operating a vehicle or being outside his residence at night.
While officers were investigating the Acura, a Tesla SUV arrived at high speed. As officers attempted to speak with the driver, the vehicle reversed, striking two officers before fleeing the scene. One officer sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the second officer suffered minor injuries.
Police have identified the Tesla driver as Yaseen Waggan. He is wanted on multiple charges, including flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a conveyance, assault causing bodily harm, and failing to comply with a release order.
