Durham Regional Police report major drug arrests and officer assault charge
The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has reported significant developments regarding both large-scale enforcement and internal misconduct.
Under the drug and theft enforcement initiative known as Project Atlantis II, officers in Oshawa have made 490 arrests and laid 808 charges since April. The operation focused on disrupting the sale of illicit drugs and the possession of stolen property. Mayor Dan Carter noted that while the operation highlights police work, enforcement alone cannot solve community issues like mental health, addiction, and homelessness.
Separately, a DRPS constable from the West Division has been charged with one count of assault following an on-duty incident during an arrest. The officer, who has three years of service, has been reassigned to administrative duties pending court proceedings and an investigation under the Community Safety and Policing Act.
