Durum wheat prices show stability in Italy
The durum wheat market at the beginning of October 2026 shows a period of stability in wholesale prices. This occurs during a transition phase between the commercialization of the domestic harvest and the arrival of foreign products from both EU and non-EU sources.
In major exchange hubs such as Milan and Bari, national durum wheat prices for the 2026 harvest remain stagnant. High-protein categories (13% protein or higher) are showing more price resilience, with quotes ranging between 297 and 344 euros per ton in Central-Northern and Southern markets, compared to the 260-280 euros per ton seen in other categories.
For the Italian semolina industry and pasta producers, the current market presents opportunities for stable procurement costs. Experts suggest that high-end pasta manufacturers, particularly those focusing on 100% Italian grain or bronze-die extrusion, should secure supply contracts for lots with high gluten and protein parameters to ensure quality.
