Dust column phenomenon observed in Cachoeira do Arari, Marajó

A rotating column of dust was recorded by residents in Cachoeira do Arari, located in the Marajó archipelago in Pará, Brazil. Videos of the event circulated on social media, prompting local curiosity regarding its origin.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) suggests the phenomenon may be a dust devil. According to Inmet, these occurrences are common on hot days when intense ground heating causes surface air to rise and rotate, creating a column that lifts dust, sand, and small debris. While typically shorter in duration and less intense than tornadoes, Inmet notes that the force can vary and may pose risks by spreading debris.

Official confirmation of the specific cause of the Cachoeira do Arari event has not yet been released, as visual recordings alone are insufficient for a definitive identification.
