He said the decision was driven by family considerations, concerns over long‑term head trauma and the diminishing likelihood of another title shot, noting, “I don’t think I was going to get another title shot… I don’t want to fight just for a paycheck.”

In the same interview, Poirier questioned veteran lightweight Michael Chandler’s future, dismissing the idea of a move to welterweight and asking, “What are 170s going to do?” and “What are you fighting for?” suggesting Chandler should consider hanging up his gloves as well.
