Dusty May details move from Michigan to Dallas Mavericks

Dusty May has detailed the circumstances surrounding his decision to leave Michigan basketball to become a coach for the Dallas Mavericks. Following a national championship with Michigan, May was approached by Mavericks general manager Mike Schmitz on May 24.

May noted that the timing of the recruitment coincided with his disillusionment following Big Ten spring meetings, where he felt the league was failing to address irreversible changes to the game, such as the transfer portal. While he had previously planned to remain at Michigan through the 2026-27 season, the opportunity to coach in the NBA—a long-held ambition—proved decisive.

May cited the Mavericks' leadership and young roster as key factors in his choice. He is the first coach since Larry Brown in 1988 to win a national title and move to another team the following season. He is currently recovering from hip surgery in Ann Arbor ahead of upcoming training camp.
