Dusty May joins Dallas Mavericks after leaving Michigan

Dusty May has joined the Dallas Mavericks as head coach, leaving the University of Michigan shortly after winning a national championship. May cited frustrations with the current state of college athletics as a primary motivator for the move to the NBA.

May expressed disillusionment with the NCAA system, specifically regarding the lack of stability caused by the transfer portal and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) regulations. He noted that the inability to secure binding commitments from players makes roster management difficult, stating, “When we sign a player, we don’t really have them signed.”

Additionally, May highlighted the heavy administrative burden placed on college coaches. He reported spending excessive time on tasks such as fundraising, booster tours, and recruiting rather than coaching. He indicated that the NBA offers a better opportunity to focus on player relationships and basketball development.
