Dutch academics face mental health crisis, study finds
A study by De Jonge Akademie reveals that 25 percent of academics in the Netherlands experience moderate to severe depressive symptoms, with a similar percentage reporting anxiety-related issues such as insomnia, tension, and excessive worrying.
The research, which surveyed nearly 2,000 academics ranging from PhD candidates to professors, identifies several systemic drivers for these mental health challenges. Key factors include a culture of hypercompetition, intense pressure to publish, social insecurity, and the prevalence of temporary contracts that create job instability for young researchers.
Psychiatrist and researcher Joeri Tijdink notes that while PhD candidates are particularly vulnerable, postdocs and university lecturers also show significant signs of distress. Additionally, the report highlights that international researchers tend to experience higher levels of mental health issues and lower job satisfaction, potentially due to a lack of social support networks.
