Dutch bailiffs face rising levels of aggression and violence
A new study commissioned by the Royal Dutch Association of Bailiffs (KBvG) reveals widespread aggression and violence against bailiffs in the Netherlands. According to the research conducted by Ipsos I&O, 85 percent of bailiffs reported experiencing some form of aggression, threat, or intimidation in 2025.
While much of the hostility is verbal, approximately one-quarter of bailiffs reported being victims of physical aggression. Specific incidents reported include being beaten, chased with tools like pitchforks or crowbars, and threats involving flammable liquids. Additionally, one in five bailiffs reported being threatened with suicide during their work.
The aggression is primarily directed at individuals with outstanding debts. The impact on the profession is significant, with nearly half of the respondents stating they find less enjoyment in their work due to these incidents, and one-quarter considering a career change. To mitigate risks, some bailiffs have begun wearing bulletproof vests or carrying emergency panic buttons to alert police during live recorded encounters.
