Dutch Broadcaster NPO Closes Soul & Jazz and Campus Radio Stations
The Netherlands’ public broadcaster NPO announced that it will cease broadcasting NPO Soul & Jazz on 1 September 2026. The shutdown will save roughly €247,000 ($285,000) a year – about 0.03 % of the broadcaster’s operating budget – after the station had already been reduced to an automated music stream earlier in 2026. The closure ends a service that began in 2006.
At the same time, NPO will also discontinue NPO Campus Radio on 1 September (2024). The station, created in 2017 as a training ground for emerging DJs and audio makers, has been described by the broadcaster as a “springboard” for new talent. While the dedicated channel will disappear, NPO says its talent‑development team will continue and will seek placement for trainees on existing NPO stations. Both moves are part of a broader cost‑cutting and consolidation effort within Dutch public broadcasting, echoing earlier closures of youth‑focused stations at other Dutch media groups.
Jurre Bosman, NPO’s director of audio and video, acknowledged the cultural value of the two stations while confirming the financial rationale for their termination.
