Dutch businesses urge investment in Nedersaksenlijn rail link
A coalition of over twenty business organizations and educational institutions, including Alfa College and Noorderpoort, is urging the Dutch government to honor commitments regarding the Nedersaksenlijn. The proposed rail connection aims to better link Groningen with the eastern Netherlands via Veendam and Stadskanaal, potentially driving economic growth, housing development, and employment.
The project faces uncertainty following statements from Infrastructure Minister Vincent Karremans, who indicated that previous financial pledges might be reconsidered to prioritize maintenance. A decision regarding specific infrastructure projects is expected on October 16.
In a separate development regarding regional rail sustainability, research by ProRail, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, and the provinces of Friesland and Groningen suggests that battery-powered trains are the most viable solution for northern Dutch rail lines. By 2035, the 68 diesel trains currently operating in the region could be replaced by battery-electric models. This transition could save approximately 8.5 million liters of diesel annually without requiring full electrification of the 250-kilometer track, instead utilizing strategic charging points.
